It's fantastic to have Gunther Schuller's reminiscences and thoughts about these subjects. He was involved in so many classic sessions with great artists no longer with us -- Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Gil Evans, John Lewis, etc. These are invaluable bits of music history. The controversy about bringing together jazz and classical seems hard to fathom, given that creativity knows no airtight boundaries. The "purist" mindset, with its tidy labels, is such a limitation; as Ellington said, "beyond category." Not only that, but so much of the great music of the 20th century exhibits elements of both genres. The deeper syntheses keep ramifying. As performer, composer, and historian, Mr. Schuller has made a major contribution to the development of great music.
