Trumpeter Miles Davis records Quiet Nights with arranger Gil Evans, 1962. This album featured Indianapolis native J.J. Johnson on trombone.
This week, our Videos of the Day are featuring the local high school and college jazz bands that will be performing at IJF 2011 on the Education Stage. Our second selection comes from the IUPUI Jazz Ensemble, playing the classic “Take the ‘A’ Train”

Drummer/composer/bandleader Louie Bellson born 1924 in Rock Falls, IL. In 1987, at the Percussive Arts Society convention, Bellson and Harold Farberman performed a major orchestral work titled “Concerto for Jazz Drummer and Full Orchestra“, the first piece ever written specifically for jazz drummer and full symphony orchestra. The Percussive Arts Society‘s headquarters is located in downtown Indianapolis.

Vocalist Annie Ross born 1930 in Surrey, England. Ross recorded an album, In Hoagland (Baldeagle 1981), with Indiana native Hoagy Carmichael.
Today’s video comes from piano phenom and 2011 IJF performer Aaron Diehl, performing Quincy Davis’ “Travels” at the Players Club in New York City in 2010. Aaron will be playing IJF Friday the 16th of September for a special gig at The Jazz Kitchen. What a great way to spend the evening before the IJF main event!

Duke Ellington records Sepia Panorama, 1940. The song appeared on the album Never No Lament, a compilation that also contained songs by Irving Mills. Mills was a music publisher and is credited for discovering Indiana native Hoagy Carmichael.

Pianist/composer Thelonious Monk records Criss-Cross in 1951. A Dutch jazz record label was named after this album and Indianapolis native Melvin Rhyne has released twelve albums for the label.
Today’s video comes from 2011 IJF performer Spyro Gyra playing their hit “Incognito,” aat the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands (it comes from the same performance we featured earlier this week).
